March Newsletter

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
In my desire to move more fully into my identity as a performing singer/songwriter, I’ve been making room in my life by embracing SIMPLICITY and SPACE. My beloved Sheila and I have been de-cluttering our home from top to bottom, and the changes that the process is manifesting in the rest of our lives, collectively and individually, is nothing short of astounding... I’m excited and scared about what the simplicity and space is uncovering (my creativity and my fear), AND grateful that this life choice is enlarging me, not diminishing me (see last month’s Blog / Newsletter). AMEN, AND FULL SPEED AHEAD! :-)
With this in mind, I offer you a quote and a video. First, the quote (from the Dalai Lama): “If one's life is simple, contentment has to come. Simplicity is extremely important for happiness. Having few desires, feeling satisfied with what you have, is very vital: satisfaction with just enough food, clothing, and shelter to protect yourself from the elements. And finally, there is an intense delight in abandoning faulty states of mind and in cultivating helpful ones in meditation.”... Second, the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOhf3OvRXKg - an insight into the healing power of a single artist with a simple gift.
May both this quote and this video inspire you as deeply as they inspire me. (If YOU have suggestions for inspirational media to share in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at NathenAswell@Me.com - I’d love to hear from you.)

Here are my highlights from the last month or so:

- Performing with Darryl Nixon, David Sinclair and Shawn Soucy at St. Andrew’s-Wesley church. THANKS, mates, for the opportunity to rock out on a Sunday morning!

- Being a part of the excitement of the Vancouver Olympics by performing on several stages around town (with The Hitmen and with The Euphorics) during the Games. I’m SO proud of my city and of my country!

February Newsletter
04/02/10 16:31
Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
It was delicious to start the new year with a much-needed vacation in Maui with my dear Sheila, AND I’m happy to be home and connecting with all of you again. :-)
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions; I set intentions. My intention for this year is to move more fully into my new identity as a singer/songwriter, and away from the safety of my old identity as a musician. Scary? YOU BET! AND I feel quite inspired by this quote (from “What Matters Most”, by James Hollis): “Fear is the enemy. Life is not your enemy; the Other is not your enemy; fear is the enemy, and fear has crowded you into a diminished corridor of that vast mansion of possibility that the gods provide us. Ask yourself of every dilemma, every choice, every relationship, every commitment, or every failure to commit, ‘Does this choice diminish me, or enlarge me?’ Do not ask this question if you are afraid to find the answer. You might be afraid of what your own soul will require of you, but at least you then know your marching orders.” Hmm...!!! To put it another way, I offer you this video from Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq5fnQO6w1I
May both this quote and this video inspire you as deeply as they inspire me. (THANKS to my dear friends Peter & Nancy Mortifee for James Hollis’ book, and to my friend Anne Bemel for Dr. Taylor’s video. If YOU have suggestions for inspirational media to share in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at NathenAswell@Me.com - I’d love to hear from you.)

December/January Newsletter
04/12/09 20:34
Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
(I seem to be gravitating towards “double” newsletters; I was away for most of November, and will be away for most of January too. Hmm... Let’s see what unfolds in the months ahead... :-))
Life is getting VERY interesting for me these days. TRUST and SURRENDER are moving beyond being words in my mind and are becoming a living, breathing reality in my body. NOTICING - being with what is, without judgement - is too... My Virgo mind would love to be able to tell you WHY this is happening, AND I think that the best answer I can give you is that I’m now clearly stating my intentions and handing over the HOW of them to Mother/Father/God/Higher Consciousness/Love... Is what I’m feeling an answer to a prayer? I would say YES... Whatever the reason, I am MOST grateful for all that is unfolding in my life, and it is my intention to continue to SHOW UP, be as fully present in every moment as I can be, and to let go of the HOW...
With this in mind, I offer you a quote and a video. First, the quote (from Abraham, through Esther Hicks): "In your action, you lose sight of the vision; you lose sight of your trust in the process, and you just bang around in a sense of futility. Hold the vision and trust that the Universe will acclimate to your vision. Hold the vision and trust the process." Second, the video: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/elizabeth_gilbert_on_genius.html - an invitation for us all to keep showing up. May they both inspire you as deeply as they inspire me. (THANKS to my dear friends Monika Becker, for the quote, and Zoey Wren, for the video. If YOU have suggestions for inspirational media to share in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@me.com.)

Here are my highlights from the last month or so:
- Performing at THREE new churches - CSL Kamloops, Symphony of Life (Ojai, CA), and CSL Edmonton - and returning to Unity of Nanaimo to musically support author and guest speaker Aman Motwane. (SO happy to be with you again, Aman!) My heartfelt THANKS to the ministers, music directors, musicians, sound technicians and congregations at each of these communities - it’s an honour and a pleasure to serve you, to be so warmly received by you, and to be building relationships with you. :-)
- Performing three Elvis classics (“All Shook Up”, “Love Me Tender” and “Hound Dog”) in “Sentimental Journey” (a fundraiser for the Spiritual Centre for Dynamic Living). It was SO much fun to see the surprised look on the faces of those who only know my gentler Sunday morning musical identity! THANKS to Barb Brolly for ALL of the effort that she put into making this show such a success. :-)
- Touring CA with The Euphorics. There’s something magical about four people singing together with open hearts. THANKS, gang, for all that you teach me on AND off stage. :-)
- Performing at my dear friend Zoey Wren’s “Make Me A River” CD release party. THANKS, dear Zoey, for shining your light SO brightly that night, and for the honour and pleasure of making YOUR music with you. :-)
- Performing solo at St. Paul’s Labyrinth. What a treat it was to sing and play from my heart for TWO HOURS on my own! AND, somewhere in the middle of the experience, I had an “AHA” moment: that THIS is what my next CD will sound like - !!! THANKS to all at St. Paul’s for the opportunity and for the inspiration. :-)

REPORT

October/November Newsletter
21/10/09 09:49
Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
(Sorry that I’m a little later than usual this month - there’s a LOT going on. I’ll get back on track by making this a “double” newsletter.)
October: After the fresh start of September, with new routines now well established, a time to notice and to give thanks for all that is unfolding. While I make it my practice to do this as often as I can, (Canadian) Thanksgiving Day is my favourite holiday and a special time for me to express my gratitude. (In 1992, I chose Thanksgiving Day as the day to leave Montreal and to begin my new life in Vancouver, knowing that I would then have one more reason to celebrate the day every year; and now, 17 years later, I have MANY more reasons to celebrate it.) I am truly grateful for everything that is unfolding in my life, and I’m excited about stepping ever more deeply into the fullness of who I am. Thank YOU for being a part of my journey. :-)
With this in mind, I offer you this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DhHXoIC0iU - an invitation for us all to step more deeply into appreciation for ourselves and for all that is. May it inspire you as deeply as it inspires me. (If YOU have suggestions for inspirational media to include in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@me.com.)

September: After slower summer days, a fresh start. I’ve just returned from a terrific vacation with my family, and I’m feeling rejuvenated, peaceful AND excited about the year ahead. (My new CD will be born this year - I can feel it in my TOES!)
With this in mind, I offer you this interactive piece of music, “In B Flat” - http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=3809a - a wonderful opportunity for each and every one of us to PLAY. May it inspire you as deeply as it inspires me. (THANKS to my dear friend Joyanna Anthony - “Ms. Sunshine”! - for sending this my way. If YOU have suggestions for inspirational media to include in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@me.com.)

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
May: For me, the major life lesson continues to be about deepening, and the importance of patience, persistence, and perseverance. In the last month, I’ve had the very good fortune of re-connecting with two old and cherished friends from Montreal: John MacMaster, the leader of my first professional musical group (“Vision”, a Christian rock choir) and now a world-class operatic tenor (http://www.johnmacmaster.com/); and Steve Sims, facilitator (www.iasis.ca) and now an author of an exciting new book (www.riverofawareness.com/). Both of these men have given me some valuable perspective on where I’ve been and on where I now am, and I’m happy to finally be able to see them as what they’ve been all along - my brothers and my peers. THANK YOU, John and Steve - I dearly love and appreciate you both.
AMEN for the powerful men in my life! Courtesy of one of them from The Mankind Project (http://www.mkp.org/), I offer you this video: http://www.globalonenessproject.org/videos/agameforlife - a powerful statement about patience, persistence, and perseverance. May it inspire you as deeply as it inspires me. (If you have suggestions for inspirational media to include in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@ me.com.)

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
March: The arrival of spring and new life. The energy in the air is inspiring me to make new commitments and (re)discover the importance of ritual in my life, with the biggest (re)commitment being to my instrument (http://www.stick.com/instruments/ns/) and my music - and I’m VERY excited about ALL that’s unfolding as a result (!!!). With that, I offer you both a speech (http://pianotree.wordpress.com/2008/09/06/inspirational-speech/) and a podcast (http://www.ascboston.org/downloads/podcast/080824.mp3) by Karl Paulnack, pianist and director of music division at Boston Conservatory, on the importance and power of music. May they inspire you as deeply as they have inspired me. (And if you have anything that you’d like to share with me about commitments and rituals in your life, I’d be happy and honoured to hear from you.)
I’m very grateful to all of the artists that contribute to Maplepost, a mailing list for members of the Canadian folk music community, and to the person who included the links to Karl Paulnack in one of their messages. If you have suggestions for inspirational media to include in a future newsletter, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@me.com.

Here are my highlights from the last month or so:
- Performing at Kirtan (chanting) nights with my dear friend Sandra Dawn, and with the wise and open-hearted Amir O’Loughlin, and richly enjoying the evolution of the sacred sound generated with each of them;
- Serving several local New Thought churches with my music making, and relishing my deepening friendships at all of them;
- Being one of the performers at Unity of Vancouver’s annual “Metaphysical Mardi Gras” Coffee House, which is ALWAYS a hoot and a half (!).
BIG THANKS to all. :-)

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
February: The month in which we celebrate LOVE. May we honour this month by first loving ourselves, so that we may then more fully love all those around us.
This month’s video offering exemplifies this quite beautifully: www.thelastlecture.com. (Click on “Watch The Last Lecture” at the bottom of the left-hand column.) It’s the last lecture given by Professor Randy Pausch before he died (less than a year after this lecture) of pancreatic cancer, and is truly an act of love for himself, his family, and his students and colleagues. (The video is about 90 minutes long, AND please trust me when I say that you’ll be very happy that you made the time to watch it.)
BIG thanks to my dear friend Nancy Mortifee for this month’s video. If you have suggestions for videos to include in future newsletters, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@me.com.

Here are my highlights from the last month or so:
- Performing Kirtan (Chants) with my dear friend Sandra Dawn in our new “home” at East West Yoga. (BEAUTIFUL energy there!)
- Working two very talented folks into The Hitmen (now re-named The Hits): Russell Marsland (guitar and vocals) and Aimée Ayotte (vocals). Welcome aboard, you two; I’m VERY happy to be making music with the both of you!
- Subbing in Famous Players, another local corporate band. GREAT fun. Thanks, Courtenay, for your leadership, and Kelly, for your vision!
- Kicking off the first House Concert in my new series by sharing the bill with local guitar wizard David Sinclair, and playing to a full house. BIG thanks to all who atttended, and to David for the gifts of his musicianship, gentle humour and friendship.
- Playing my NS Stick at ALL of this month’s performances! I’m thrilled to now be able to bring the “colours” of this beautiful instrument to all of my music making, and I’m very excited about deepening my exploration of it. BIG thanks to Emmett Chapman and to Ned Steinberger for inventing it!
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES
BIG NEWS: In March, I’ll be performing at the Affiliated New Thought Network Conference (in Phoenix), and in May, I’ll be performing at Harmonizing With Humanity’s Autism Awareness Music Fest (also in Phoenix). Please take a minute to read the announcement below about the HwH Fest, and see if getting involved with it and with HwH resonates for you:
“Announcing Harmonizing with Humanity’s first-ever live Music Festival in Arizona!
AUTISM AWARENESS MUSIC FEST
May 2-3, 2009
I’d like to share with you an organization that I’ve just been invited to be part of. It’s called Harmonizing with Humanity and it’s very important on the scale of supporting different causes.
If you live anywhere near Arizona or feel inspired to travel to be part of history in the making and are interested in attending one of the most unique music festivals of our time (while supporting an important cause), this weekend is something you will not want to miss!
And… as a beloved fan you also have a great opportunity to be exposed to other like-minded artists from the positive music genre (17 Indie musicians) who will share the stage with one big national act soon to be announced.
Also, Harmonizing with Humanity’s first album is being launched in mid February showcasing Indie artists and original songs. “The Life That’s Chosen Me” will be their first project initiative to create a vehicle for donations that will go back to schools and organizations (for special needs children) that depend on funding from private sponsors.
Click here for more information and to sign up for our mailing list (don’t worry we won’t be bombarding you) to be part of a growing music community that I would love to share with you. We’ll be doing two big events per year and we need your support to get this grassroots effort started.
This is a great way to start the year off by supporting music and all different causes at the same time. The May event just happens to be about supporting autism. They are now having talks about creating musical tours to raise awareness in cities across the country. If you are interested, you could request your city and bring famous musicians right to your home town!
CLICK HERE TO READ ALL ABOUT MUSIC FEST 2009 AND KEEP UP TO DATE TO FIND OUT WHO’S SINGING AND SPEAKING, AND REGISTER YOURSELF.

Since this music festival supports autism awareness, please forward this to any friends who would like to support this cause.”

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
December! Here it is, in all of its glory: short days, unpleasant weather, and all of us rushing around and preparing for the holiday season. Remembering to take care of ourselves can be quite a challenge - AND even small things can help us a great deal; a good night’s sleep, a deep breath, a few minutes of meditation, a short walk, some healthy food (instead of chocolate!), a hot shower, and... the expression of our feelings. With this in mind, I offer you the following link: http://www.vimeo.com/1211060.
Every time *I* watch this video, I laugh and cry tears of joy. Amazing, isn’t it, how something as simple as a silly little dance can change how we see the world? May YOU feel joy this month! :-)
REPORT
I’m finding it harder and harder to pick monthly highlights; SO many great things are happening in and around me, and I’m grateful for ALL of it. Here are the best of the best:
- Performing my music at The Spiritual Centre for Dynamic Living. I’ve known Revs. Austin and Mary Hennessey for many years, and it’s wonderful to see them living their ministry ever more fully. BIG thanks, Austin and Mary, for all that you do in and for the world, and for the love that you generate every Sunday morning.
- Performing with Bonnie Ste-Croix at Café Deux Soleils in East Vancouver. It was great to perform with Bonnie in my old neighbourhood, AND to share the stage with two other great singer/songwriters: Carolyna Loveless and Melissa Bandura. Thanks to all three for a truly fun night of music making.
- “Sharing the bill” at the Centre for Spiritual Living with my dear friend Gillian Roberts and performing two of my songs, including one that I wrote specifically to compliment her talk that morning. BIG thanks, Gillian, for dancing with me and for helping me to “get out of my own way”!
- Performing (as the bassist in the “house band”) in Brock Tully’s “Kindness Sings” Concerts (formerly “The World Kindness” Concerts). This is my sixth year with Brock and his amazing crew, and every year’s concerts are a highlight of my year. We generate a LOT of love with our music making. Thanks team!
- Performing with my pals in “California Calling” (a tribute band that celebrates the music of The Beach Boys and ALL things related to summer). There’s nothing quite like harmonizing with four other guys. Thanks lads!
- Flying to Calgary for four performances in two days (an in-store appearance, a house concert, a church service and a Christmas concert). BIG thanks to Sheryl Guillaume (for her love and support for what I do), Susan Cullen and Jackie Coyle (for being such INCREDIBLE house concert hosts, and to Susan for opening up her home to me), Bruce Petherick (for sharing the house concert stage with me, and for setting up the whole weekend for me), Anthony Burbidge (who started all this by organizing my first trip to Calgary in December of ‘07), and to ALL who came to my performances. I’m happy and honoured to now call many of you friends.
- Meeting with my songwriters circle, and honouring the creativity in all involved. BIG thanks, esteemed colleagues!
- Slowly but surely, I’m writing the songs for my next CD, and I’m very happy and excited about that. Thanks to all who responded to my request for a “cover song” for it; if YOU have an idea for a song that I should “cover”, please e-mail me at nathenaswell@shaw.ca.

November Newsletter

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
November: In Vancouver, it’s a time of less daylight and more rain - for me, a perfect combination for helping to cultivate inner stillness. I am blessed to be a part of much music-making in my life, and to enjoy the love and friendship of many people, AND I welcome this time of year and its energy as I begin the process of birthing a new CD. My goal is to have it ready for the world by May 1st of 2009 - please help me to envision that!
I’m thinking about including a “cover” song (a song written by someone else) on my next CD, and I’d very much welcome your input on helping me to pick the “right” one. Please e-mail me at nathenaswell.com with your “vote”, and why you think I should cover it. Thanks!
REPORT
I have MANY highlights to share from the last month or so:
- Participating in the FAR-West music conference in Mesa, AZ. I am grateful for all those whom attended my showcases, for the new connections I made, and for the deepening of existing friendships. I’d especially like to thank Michael Morales, my songwriting buddy from Seattle, for hosting a truly incredible showcase room and for modeling how to “work” the exhibit hall - all with a beautiful, relaxed grace; Bonnie Ste-Croix, fellow ex-Quebecer and current Vancouverite, for the pleasure of accompanying her in her showcases; and Freebo and Moe Dixon, for the pleasure of some great shared music-making. (Check out Moe’s ukuleles at www.myamoeukuleles.com/ - they’re AMAZING instruments!)
- Performing at the Unity Coffee House here in Vancouver. These magical little nights have been going on for a while now, AND this was by far the best attended of the lot. Word is getting out! Big thanks to everyone at Unity of Vancouver; it’s an honour to be a part of your musical “team”.
- Performing Kirtan (Chanting) with Sandra Dawn at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, and with Amir at Yoga on 7th. What a gift it is to create music that opens hearts. BIG thanks to both Sandra and to Amir for sharing these moments with me.
- I’ve never included my church performances as highlights in my reports, AND it’s high time that I did. I perform at many churches, and I enjoy the energy and the people at every one of them. Thank you all for the pleasure of serving you.
- Doing a photo shoot with Daniel J. Collins. What fun it was to dance with Daniel’s passion and creativity! Big thanks, Daniel! (Info on where to find some of the pics from our shoot is below, in the “New Web Site Content” section.)
- Starting a songwriters circle with Katherine Scott, fellow Vancouverite and PMA (Positive Music Association) member. It’s very powerful to share ideas with other songwriters and to feel their support for your creative process. Big thanks to Katherine for helping to make it happen, and to Robert Anderson for the inspiration to start it.
- Hanging out with my old buddy Dominique Messier, drummer extraordinaire and member of Celine Dion’s band. What a gift it is to sit down with a friend that you haven’t seen in ages, and to connect with him as if you’d only seen him yesterday. BIG thanks, Dom, for your respect and for your friendship - it means a great deal to me. (AND it was great to see Mary Lou and Marc after the show too!)
- Hanging out with my dear friend Helen Davis, passionate singer and “engine” of The Euphorics, an a cappella group that I sang with for eight years. Helen, our time together was just as sweet as my time with Dom; thank you too for your love and friendship. And congrats to The Euphorics, who are still going strong after 25 years!

Hi
Everyone -
Warm greetings and blessings to you all!
May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.
Here we are in October, days away from my favourite holiday: (Canadian) Thanksgiving. In 1992, I chose Thanksgiving Day as the day to begin my new life in Vancouver, knowing that I would then have one more reason to celebrate the day every year; and now, 16 years later, I have MANY more reasons to celebrate it. I am truly grateful for everything that is unfolding in my life, and I’m excited about stepping ever more deeply into the fullness of who I am. AMEN!
What fills YOU with gratitude? Drop me a line at nathenaswell@shaw.ca and let me know; I’d love to hear from you.
REPORT
For me, THE highlight of September was my week in Kansas City, where I performed at a House Concert and then (FULLY) participated in New Thought Music Week. (Have a look at the new pictures on the “Photos” page.) It was remarkable to see and feel how much has changed for me since last year’s conference; it is my GREAT good fortune to now have many of the talented artists who gather annually for this event as dear friends. BIG thanks to Teri Wilder for opening up her home for a terrific House Concert, to Richard Mekdeci and Sue K Riley for all of the work that they put into organizing NTMW every year, and to ALL who attended this year’s event. (I must also give special thanks to Freebo, Lori Sandstrom and Robert Anderson for their open hearts, wisdom and encouragement.)
I am very grateful for ALL of the music making in my life. May every note that I sing and play help to heal the world and help us remember who and what we truly are: spiritual beings having a human experience. AMEN!

AMEN!

As I write these words, I’m enjoying a perfect September afternoon here in Vancouver - sunny with a slight breeze. Lovely! My birthday is just a few days away, and I have much to be thankful for. Here are my highlights of the last month or so - a month of “firsts”!
- While I’ve walked the Labyrinth at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Vancouver, I’d never performed there as others walked it, and making sacred sound with my dear friend Zoey Wren was very sweet. BIG thanks, Zoey - here’s to many more shared musical moments!
- While I’ve supported many artists at The Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, I’d never performed a solo set of my own music there. BIG thanks to all who sat and listened, to all who strolled by, and to all of the children and their dogs who enjoyed splashing around in the water that surrounded three sides of the stage - fabulous!
- Sharing the bill with fellow artists and good friends Michael Morales and Freebo at Pasta Nova in Woodinville, WA was a hoot! The full house was treated to the best Italian food for miles around, Michael’s sweet voice sounded better to me than it ever has, and Freebo and I had fun accompanying each other on my NS Stick. BIG thanks to all who attended, to Freebo for the privilege of making music with him, to Michael for making the whole event a reality, to Michael’s wife Debbie for her warm hospitality, and to my dear Sheila for accompanying me and taking charge of the “merch” table.
- Performing at Unity of Mesa in AZ was a VERY pleasant experience: Not only was I warmly received by Rev. Joel Baehr and his congregation, I also enjoyed the support of a terrifically talented bunch of musicians: Jimmy Boyd (piano and synthesizer), Brian Palmarino (guitar), John Chapman (upright bass) and Jason Fay (drums), with The Ja Ja’s (Jeanne Mac Laughlin and Barbara Horton) providing backup vocals. BIG thanks to all who attended the morning services and/or my afternoon concert, to the musicians, to Rev. Joel for the opportunity, and most especially to Jeanne Mac Laughlin for making it all happen with ease and grace.
I am very grateful for ALL of the music making in my life. May every note that I sing and play help to heal the world and help us remember who and what we truly are: spiritual beings having a human experience. AMEN!

In the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot about how much I’ve learned and about all of the incredible people that I’ve met in the last year, and I’m filled with great gratitude for ALL of it. Here are the highlights of the past month:
- May 15-18, I attended my first “Music Strategies” Seminar with Tim Sweeney (www.timsweeney.com). Tim is a music industry veteran who now mentors artists and encourages them to work together to achieve their goals. As one of 75 hand-picked attendees at his seminar, it was an honour for me to meet some VERY talented folks, deepen my connections with others and learn more about “how to get out of my own way”. BIG thanks, Tim, for all that you do!
- May 22-25, I took part in the 2008 Western Canada Stick Experience. 13 Chapman Stickists, 2 NS Stickists and I spent a weekend here in Vancouver playing our beloved instruments and sharing much laughter. BIG thanks to Jim Meyer (the organizer of this annual event since 2002), Steve Adelson (Stickist/instructor from NYC) and Don Schiff (NS Stickist/instructor from L.A.) for a very memorable weekend. (Epilogue: With Sheila’s encouragement, I flew to L.A. last week and traded in my secondhand NS for a brand new one. WOW! BIG thanks to Don Schiff for accompanying me to Stick Enterprises and for helping me to bring home THE perfect instrument, and to Emmett Chapman for making such beautiful instruments with great love and attention. My goal is to accompany myself entirely on my NS Stick for my shows as soon as possible, and I now feel even MORE inspired to do so!)
- On June 6, I performed a house concert in my own living room - for 35 people! BIG thanks to all who attended for their love and attention, to my dear Sheila for “Martha Swewart-izing” our home, to my dear mother-in-law Trudi for her homemade butter tarts (!), and to my pal Shawn Soucy for filming the concert. (I LOVE performing house concerts and would be honoured to do so in YOUR living room. If you feel inspired by the idea, please drop me a line at nathenaswell@shaw.ca, and let’s talk about it.)
- On June 7, it was my great pleasure to accompany Amir O’ Loughlin (teacher on the Sufi path, musician and psychotherapist) at the last of his “Universal Kirtan” evenings before he breaks for the summer. I’m honoured to be making music with this open-hearted man, and I hope to do so MUCH more in the days ahead. BIG thanks, Amir!

I enjoyed many sweet musical moments last month. I was part of an all-star cast of vocalists that sang background vocals in a local tribute to The Carpenters; I accompanied Bonnie Ste-Croix on vocals and NS Stick; I’m getting more and more deeply involved with the local chanting community (THANKS, Sandra Dawn!); I sang and played all of the Beach Boys hits with my buddies in California Calling; and I thoroughly enjoyed all of my church performances. AND... special mention must be made of my house concert on May 2nd. Marlene Haley, the host for the evening, opened up her home (with its spectacular view of English Bay) to over a dozen of us, and it gave me great joy to perform my songs (and a couple of well-chosen “covers”) to a very appreciative bunch of folks. BIG thanks, Marlene! (If anyone is interested in hosting house concerts, please let me know and I’ll gladly send you more information on them.)

REPORT
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

REPORT ON HARMONIZING WITH HUMANITY (Phoenix, AZ)
I had the good fortune of being one of 30 “New Thought” performers who took part in this event, and I can’t begin to tell you how powerful it was for all of us to be together and to share our hearts and our music with each other (as well as with some VERY warm and appreciative listeners.) BIG thanks to all, and special thanks to my new “mentors” (Freebo, Lori Sandstrom & Robert Anderson of Devotion, Harold Payne and Karen Taylor-Good) and to the HwH team for their very generous hearts and hard work (Jodi, Chef Joe, Randy, Jay, Bates, Mark, and Lea & Gary). This year’s event was the “1st annual”; may every subsequent year’s event grow and blossom as we collectively help to inspire and heal the world!
PERFORMANCES
(Please forgive me for being late with this month’s newsletter; since my return from Phoenix, I’ve had to learn, rehearse and perform a LOT of music! Full details are on the “Calendar” page.) I'll be:

- singing with Monique Creber in “Yesterday Once More: A Tribute To The Carpenters” (April 4);
- accompanying fellow Vancouver artist Bonnie Ste-Croix on NS Stick (April 8);
- co-leading another Kirtan (devotional chanting) night with my good friend Sandra Dawn Johannson in Tsawwassen (April 11);

- singing with Monique Creber, and performing solo, in “The SKiNNY Fundraiser”
(April 20);
- performing with California Calling - aka The Hitmen, plus James Wright - in a tribute to the Beach Boys (April 25 and 26);

REPORT ON FOLK ALLIANCE 2008
Attending this year’s International Folk Alliance music conference in Memphis, TN was an incredibly rich and rewarding experience; I performed in 14 showcases (including 5 of my own), made many new contacts, saw and heard a lot of amazing songwriters in action, and needed a week to recover from it all (!). Special thanks must be given to Lauren Lapointe, my songwriting goddess buddy from Savannah Georgia, who convinced me to go in the first place AND set up a gig for the two of us (at MO’s Coffeehouse, the night before FA started) to boot. THANKS, dear Lauren!
PERFORMANCES
(Full details are on the “Calendar” page). I'll be:
- performing at church services - Centre for Positive Living (March 2), Centre for Spiritual Life (March 2), Unity of Vancouver (March 23);
- co-leading my first Kirtan (devotional chanting) night with my good friend Sandra Dawn Johannson in Tsawwassen (March 7);
- performing at a morning church service and an evening solo concert at Unity Church of Calgary (March 9);
- one of 30 “Positive” Musical Artists performing in “Harmonizing With Humanity”, a fundraising event for ItoI Music and the Positive Music Association, at Quintero Golf and Country Club in Peoria, AZ, near Phoenix (March 28-30).
I’d be honoured to see you at any (or all!) of these.

ERRATUM
Last month, I expressed my heartfelt thanks to my pal Shawn Soucy “for doing all that was required - and more! - to get me to the finish line” on my CD release party video. I failed to also mention my dear friend Mandy Leith for all that SHE did on the project. If Shawn carried the ball into the end zone for the touchdown, Mandy set him up by throwing the ball from the other end of the field into Shawn’s hands at centre field. THANKS, Mandy, for all of your hard work, and please accept my sincerest apologies for not acknowledging you in last month’s newsletter.

Sticking my neck out with my NS Stick
02/09/07 14:00
Hi
Everyone -
September is upon us, and in keeping with the spirit of the new school year, I've decided to play my NS Stick (instead of my acoustic guitar) at all of my church services. I've been wanting to do this for some time, AND this morning was my inauguration at CPL in White Rock. The feedback that I got was very encouraging, and I'm looking forward to the new avenues that will open up in my performance and in my songwriting...!

New Mexico
10/08/07 23:00
Hi
Everyone -
Sheila and I just returned from a VERY rich two-week vacation in New Mexico. During the first week, we took part in an intensive couple retreat with Doug and Naomi Moseley, a very powerful and insightful couple (you can learn all about them and their process at www.IntimacyTraining.com), and during the second week, we fell in love with the desert and its open skies. (Long live the art of Georgia O'Keeffe!)

Thanks to a new friend I met at the Center for Spiritual Living in Vancouver, I'm now a member of the PMA, or Positive Music Association. Headed up by Scott Johnson, this organization is all about getting positive music out into the world. Check out PMA's web site at www.positivemusicassociation.com

My Intention
24/04/07 16:44
Hi
Everyone -
I've been busy with other things for the last month AND am now once again focusing my energy on getting the word out about my CD. My intention is to find distribution for it, and to tour. If any of you have ideas about how to help me realize my intention, I'd love to hear from you; I KNOW that there are ears that want to hear what I'm doing. Thanks!
With love and gratitude,
- Nathen

Film of CD release party
24/03/07 17:30
Hi
Everyone -
As I write this, my dear friend Mandy Leith is hard at work editing footage (from FOUR cameras!) that was shot at my CD release party. My hope is to have a document of the whole event, as well as individual songs which can be viewed online and a short highlight clip. If there's enough interest, I may well make the full-length version available for sale. I'll keep you all posted. In the meantime, be well!

Web site changes
23/03/07 17:24
Hi
Everyone -
The CD release party has inspired me to make some changes to the content of my site. Besides the usual calendar update, there's much more info on my "Music / Podcast" page about the inspiration behind each of my songs, new press clippings on my "Bio / Press" page, and some new links on my "Music Store / Links" page. Enjoy!
With love and gratitude,
- Nathen

CD release party a HUGE success!
17/03/07 20:10
Hi
Everyone -
The CD release party was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I felt like I got to show myself more completely than I ever have, and that I was greatly affirmed in what I truly feel to be my purpose in this lifetime: to inspire and heal people through music, and to help them remember who they really are.
My deepest thanks to everyone who was present (my fellow musicians; the sound crew; the film crew; everyone at Unity; the greeters; everyone in the audience; my dear wife Sheila; my mother-in-law Trudi) and all who were unable to be physically present AND who were very much with me in spirit.
With love and gratitude,
- Nathen

Hi
Everyone -
It's official - after almost a week of tweaking, THIS web site is up and running! (I've been at myspace.com/nathenaswell since August, and will keep that site going too.) WOOHOO! BIG thanks to Tom Carter for sending me all of the CD's images via e-mail in every conceivable size and format, until they all worked. Tom, you truly ARE a mensch!

Inspiring and healing through music
19/11/06 23:47
Hi
Everyone -
Performed tonight at St. Andrew's-Wesley Church in downtown Vancouver with Curt Allison, a Pentacostal fella originally from the southern U.S. What a pleasure it is to make joyful music - music that inspires and heals people. That's what I'm all about, and I'm delighted that my musical life is reflecting this more and more. AMEN!

Mixing, mastering, and graphics
15/11/06 23:35
Hi
Everyone -
Well - what a sweet week and a half it's been. Can't begin to tell you what it was like to mix and master shoulder-to-shoulder with Miles Foxx Hill, and to have him tell me how much he liked my tunes and the quality of my recordings. YAY!
AND I've been playing in the VISUAL sandbox (on the CD's graphics) with Tom Carter. The finished CD is going to look and sound incredible, and I'm VERY pleased. I delivered the CD master and all of the graphics to Sonrise Audio today - delivery will be on or around Dec. 5th. ALLELUIA!

Final prep
05/11/06 23:18
Hi
Everyone -
Amongst other things (my retreat, and gigs of all kinds), I've busied myself in the past month with the final preparations for mixing my CD: re-recording some things, deleting some things (painful process!), tightening up performances, converting MIDI files to audio files, and making my ProTools tracks Logic-compatible. AND - I'm ready for mixing! LET'S GO!
With love and gratitude,
- Nathen
