February Newsletter

Hi Everyone -

Warm greetings and blessings to you all!

May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.

BIG thanks to all of you who wrote to me to share what HOME means for you; I was very moved by your stories.
(I’ve posted them all on the “Feedback” page of my web site,
www.NathenAswell.com.)

As I travel more and more, my appreciation for my relationship with Sheila and for our magnificent floating home grows. Both truly ARE grounding me AND teaching me to live “in the flow” - and I am very, very grateful to be able to live in the middle of that delicious paradox.

And so - feeling both grounded and in the flow - I’m ready for something new.

I’ve started reading Ernest Holmes’ “Science Of Mind”, and these words are really exciting me:
“Here and now, we are surrounded by, and immersed in, an Infinite Good. How much of this Infinite Good is ours? ALL OF IT! And how much of It may we have to use? AS MUCH OF IT AS WE CAN EMBODY.”

WOW! NO LIMITS!

Really?

It sure seems that way; since the beginning of this year, I’ve been “trying this on” - inspired by Holmes’ words, my new mantra has been “open wide the floodgates” - and truly amazing things are happening within me (a deep sense of calm and purpose) and around me (as you’ll see in my “Report” below) with ease and grace. Life is an adventure, so I’m going to keep saying YES to this “experiment” and see what happens!

How about you? Wanna say YES and “open wide the floodgates”? I’d truly like to know, so please e-mail me at
NathenAswell@me.com and share your thoughts and feelings with me; we’re ALL in this together, and we have much to learn from each other. :-)

REPORT

Here are my highlights from the last two months or so:

- Performing at a WIDE variety of local Christmas-season events (Christmas In The Round, Oppenheimer Christmas Dinner, Unity of Vancouver’s Candlelighting Service, CSL White Rock’s Christmas Eve Service, Christmas Caroling at Delta Hospital on Christmas Day, Kirtan on New Year’s Eve with Amir, and on my own on New Year’s Day at St. Paul’s Labyrinth). BIG thanks to ALL of the talented folks involved in these events; it gives me great joy to make music with each of you. XO

- Performing and recording in Atlanta with my good friend and co-writing buddy Jennifer Ferren, and with my dear friend Penelope Williams and her talented crew at Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta. THANKS, dear friends; I LOVED my first taste of the south, and I look forward to returning as soon (and as often) as I can! XO

- Co-writing, performing, and enjoying a million OTHER kinds of rich moments at this year’s Posi Music Festival In Orlando. (I even managed to “sneak out” in the middle of the weekend and have a fantastic time performing at First Unity of St. Petersburg!) I am truly blessed to be a part of the tribe that gathers annually for this event, and truly grateful to Sue Riley & Richard Mekdeci and their tireless team for ALL that they do to make this dream a reality. Much, MUCH love to you all. XO

- Performing at a House Concert in Snohomish, WA with my new friend and great singer/songwriter Larry Murante. THANKS to Mike Morales, mutual friend and host who had the vision to bring Larry and me together, and to Larry for a fantastic night of music making!

- Performing at Seattle Unity with the uber-talented (and VERY funny!) Erin McGaughan and her terrific crew. THANKS, dear Erin; let’s do this again, and SOON! :-)

- Performing at a House Concert in White Rock, BC. THANKS to Shirley Henderson for hosting it, and to many of her neighbours for saying YES to a new adventure! :-)

- Writing and performing a new song for Rev. Terry Shea’s new monthly Satsang, and writing and performing a new song for Rev. Terry’s Sunday Service (both at CSL White Rock). My intention is to write one new chant and one new song every month of this year, so TWO new CDs are being born! Thanks, dear Terry, for always inspiring me! XO

December/January Newsletter

Hi Everyone -

Warm greetings and blessings to you all!

May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.

After 45 years, my mother-in-law Trudi recently sold the family home. The day before the new owners took possession of it, my wife Sheila and I said goodbye to it: we spent time in every room of it, sharing our memories, and then ended the ritual by thanking the entire space for the role that it has played in our lives, and by acknowledging that our memories of it will keep it alive in our hearts. It got both Sheila and I thinking about home: what it means to us - a state of being, as well as a physical space - and how we can enrich our sense of home in our new physical home, as well as in ourselves and in each other...

This has been, and continues to be, a very rich exploration for me. Here is some of what’s bubbling up to the surface:
- Home is where the heart is. My home is where Sheila is.
- I’m not a multi-tasker; I’m at home - most myself - when I can be slow and thorough about things.
- All of my physical stuff is - MUST be - an outward expression of my heart/home energy. (If it isn’t, it doesn’t serve me.)
- I’ve moved a LOT in my life; our present home is the 20th (!) place I’ve lived in... and the first home I’ve owned. Could it be that I’ve finally found a place to land, to stop and rest, to ground and nourish myself, so that I can better life a life of loving service?
- A heightened awareness of my heart/home energy will serve me well when I travel; it will allow me to more fully be “at home” wherever I physically am.

Grateful am I for this travel-free - ORDINARY (!) - period of time, so that I could notice all of this. :-)

How about you? What does HOME mean for you? I’d truly like to know, so please e-mail me at
NathenAswell@me.com and share it with me - we’re ALL in this together, and we have much to learn from each other. :-)

REPORT

Here are my highlights from the last month or so:

1) Having my song “Be Still” available as a free download from emPOWER Music and Arts (
www.empowerma.com) on Nov. 19th, as part of Positive Music Month. With many other like-hearted artists standing shoulder to shoulder with me, I’m proud to be helping change the world through music. :-)

2) Performing:
- With my buddy, singer/songwriter/guitarist Russell Marsland at CSL White Rock. When I hear great music making, I laugh out loud with joy, and when I play with Russell, I laugh a LOT. THANKS, dear Russell, for being such a treasure. XO
- With Chris Segerson at Unity of Vancouver. Chris is a MASTER pianist, and a humble soul; when I grow up, I want to be just like him! THANKS, dear Chris, for always inspiring me. :-)
- With Tom & Georgina Arntzen, Joani Bye and Shawn Soucy. Every year, the five of us perform at a fundraiser for SHARE (
http://www.sharesociety.ca/), and every year, the joy amongst us - and emanating from us - grows. THANKS, dear friends, for the gift of your friendship and for the power of our shared music making. XO
- With Joani Bye and her sister Janet. When the three of us sing Christmas music together, it’s pure magic. THANKS, dear sisters, for connecting me to the joy of this season. XO
- For the residents at Mountain View Manor here in my new home town of Ladner. Thanks to Kate Donaldson for the opportunity to serve my community; I’m looking forward to returning on Christmas Day, with several friends in tow! :-)

3) Recording:
- Vocals for Dave Pickell on his song “There Is Love”. Dave is a master songwriter and producer, and as picky as I am (!) - AND, when we channel all of our attention to detail into creativity, the end result is VERY powerful indeed. THANKS for opening your heart to me, dear Dave; I’m very pleased to be getting to know you, and I hope to “dance” with you often!
- Bass for Dave Steele on his song “Kind To Be Kind”. Dave is a fantastic singer and songwriter, an absolute fireball of creativity, and one of the sweetest guys I know. THANKS, dear Dave, for including me in your process - I want MORE play time with you! :-)

4) Continuing to co-write with Sue Riley (FL) and Glen Roethel (NY), and with Jennifer Ferren (GA). THANKS, dear friends - creating together sure is FUN! YAY and AMEN for Skype! :-)

November Newsletter

Hi Everyone -

Warm greetings and blessings to you all!

May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.

I love being “on the road”. Life is very simple: eat, perform, rest, repeat. (Okay, there’s some travelling and e-mail in there too!). For years, I’ve wished that my life at home could be that simple - more time spent on playing and writing, less time spent on everything else - and have felt VERY judgemental about those “everything else” moments.

Last week, in a course that I’m taking with my dear friend Rev. Terry Shea, I learned that Benedictine monks make FIVE vows: poverty, chastity, obedience, stability, and conversion of manners. The last two were news to me, and the first of them - stability - has been much on my mind since learning of it.

Thomas Merton, in his book “The Sign of Jonas”, writes:
“By making a vow of stability, the monk renounces the vain hope of wandering off to find a ‘perfect monastery.’ This implies a deep act of faith: the recognition that it does not much matter where we are or whom we live with... Stability becomes difficult for a man whose monastic ideal contains some note, some element of the extraordinary. All monasteries are more or less ordinary... Its ordinariness is one of its greatest blessings.”

Bingo. Extraordinary vs. ORDINARY.

I struggle with ordinary! I want to be unique, stand out from the pack, be SEEN... AND the reality is that my life, for the most part, IS pretty ordinary...

SO - I hereby commit to explore the blessing of ordinariness, and grow in my appreciation of it...!!!
AND SO IT IS!

How is YOUR relationship with ORDINARY? I’d truly like to know, so please e-mail me at
NathenAswell@me.com and share it with me - we’re ALL in this together, and we have much to learn from each other. :-)

P.S. BIG THANKS to my dear friends Thomas Moore (medical intuitive) and Rita Britnell (emotional intuitive), who made short order of my last round of candida and taught me some important things about my body. You can learn more about the loving work that they do at

Since moving to Vancouver from Montreal in ’92, I periodically have had to deal with a condition known as candida - a buildup of the wrong kind of bacteria in my digestive system, fed by yeast and sugar. Challenging for a man with a REAL sweet tooth! AND, in choosing to ignore healthy limits around the kinds of food that I eat, the candida returns...

As I deal with my latest “round” of candida, some new thinking is emerging: What if I replaced the word “limits” with “boundaries”?
As a dear friend of mine said, limits are imposed upon us, while boundaries are of our OWN creation... And, as another dear friend said, boundaries allow me to be my best, so that I can best serve others...

All of this got me thinking about a book that I started to read two years ago: “The Power of Full Engagement”, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. One of the ideas within it that really struck me was “... performance is optimized by scheduling work into 90- to 120-minute periods of intense effort followed by shorter periods of recovery and renewal.” A healthy boundary around my time! I remember setting my day up that way, and being amazed at how much more present I was in everything that I did, and how much more I felt I had accomplished by the end of the day... Looks like it’s time for me to finish reading that book and fully absorb what it has to teach me. AND SO IT IS!

What healthy boundaries do you set for yourself so that YOU can best serve others and be FULLY ENGAGED? I’d truly like to know, so please e-mail me at
NathenAswell@me.com and share it with me - we’re ALL in this together, and we have much to learn from each other. :-)

REPORT

What an amazing summer it’s been! Here are my highlights from the last two months or so:

Performing:
- at Jon Lord’s Garden Party and at Unity Church of Calgary. Every trip to Calgary is sweeter than the one before, and my heart is FULL of gratitude for the Angels that I know there - most especially, Sheryl Guillaume. Much, MUCH love to you all for truly blowing my heart wide open. XO
- Kirtan with my buddies Sandra Dawn, Jerry DesVoignes and Frank Methuen right here in my neighbourhood. SUCH beauty in what we create! THANKS, dear friends - I truly love and appreciate you all. XO
- at Shanti Prema Hudes’ “Floatathon”, at Pacific Coast Church, at the 2011 CSL Asilomar Experience, and at Monterey Center for Spiritual Living - all in California. The more I travel, the more I find myself at home... and FULL of gratitude am I for every Angel that I meet along the way. SPECIAL THANKS to Karie Hillery, Rev. Kim Yalda, Lisa Ferraro & Karen Drucker, and Rev. Liz Mirante for sharing their journeys with me. XO
- at the Ministerial Graduation Ceremony for this year’s students of my dear friend Rev. Terry Shea in Burien, Washington. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for Terry, and it gave me great joy to honour him and his students, to make music again with some great open-hearted WA musicians, and to see some souls who are becoming friends. Blessed am I! :-)

And... Travelling to Stick Enterprises to trade in my NS Stick (walnut body, graphite neck) for a new one (ash body, bamboo neck). How happy I am to be at a point in my playing where I can truly appreciate the improvements and refinements that Emmett Chapman continues to bring to his instruments. THANKS, dear Emmett, and to ALL of your talented team, for doing what you do with such love and care. :-)
(I also bought myself a SECOND birthday present from Emmett: A bamboo Chapman Stick! Have a look at it on my “Photos” page.)

July/August Newsletter

Hi Everyone -

Warm greetings and blessings to you all!

May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe and protected from all inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.

An amazing thing is happening to me: After being a “doer” for most of my life - busily running around, taking care of all kinds of things and priding myself on being a “detail guy” - I’m learning to just BE - ! Ever so slowly, I’m discovering and exploring the space between events and choosing to NOT fill that space with more “stuff”... And in the process, I’m happier, more at peace and (of course!) getting more “done” than I ever have. AMEN to letting go and letting GOD!

THANKS (again!) to Amanda Owen for writing “The Power of Receiving” (which I’m now re-reading to let its lessons sink in even more deeply) and to Jeri Goldstein, my dear career coach (
www.PerformingBiz.com) for recommending Amanda’s book to me.

How about YOU? How are you doing with YOUR process of BE-ing? I’d truly like to know, so please e-mail me at
NathenAswell@me.com and share it with me - we’re ALL in this together, and we have much to learn from each other. :-)
